At MSB, inspired design is the rule, not the exception. We don’t design for price points or market share, and we never want to make products that are just “good enough.” Instead, we want exceptional and inspired products that move the industry forward. This is why the research and development process never stops at MSB. We are consistently making breakthroughs by experimenting with cutting-edge technology and by evaluating new components and materials. For every product we release, we make three others that will never see the light of day. This is because we know that collecting knowledge and experience while discarding our failures is the key to delivering inspired designs. With decades of experience behind him, our Chief Circuit Designer, Dustin, continuously breaks industry conventions with all new circuit layouts—creating a magical listening experience with each product. This cycle continues until we have bottled enough lightning to create and share something truly special.
With the experimentation phase complete, it is time to develop the product’s potential. At this point, each product is given its defining characteristics and functions. This is a collaborative effort to find the perfect balance between the mechanical and electrical designs. When complete, we are ready for pre-production PCB’s and initial chassis prototypes to be crafted.
The next step takes us to the listening chair. This is where we find out if the theory and measurements translate to the listening experience. Designed as a neutral and analytical listening room, we have options for voltage and isolation along with multiple sources and speakers. Built as an independent room within a room, it includes triple thickness drywall, airtight foam insulation, and studio level isolation doors. The dimensions of the room, as well as the paneling and treatment, have all been engineered to give us an optimal environment to truly analyze each element of the listening experience.
After a prototype is complete, it’s time to take the product through the crucial last check points. This is where Lead Machinist Jonathan steps in to craft the user experience. By dealing with many different formats and interfaces, he can ensure seamless playback in any system or environment. This process alone can take months of debugging with real world feedback from our beta testers.
When production receives the greenlight, the very first stage is finding the right parts. Navigating the electronics market has become more difficult with part shortages, discontinuations, and counterfeits. This is where Materials Manager Jenessa’s part purchasing and management shines. She stocks up on hard to acquire components and roots out counterfeit parts, all while balancing concurrent productions. Upon arrival, all parts are labeled, binned, and stored for production, making everything streamlined for the production floor.
With production locked in, we begin creating all associated marketing materials. With our in-house photo studio, we begin with product photography and image assets. Website layouts and product copy come next. Many details, such as technical specs tables, user guides, and product packaging, must be worked through at this stage. As we put a wrap on the final items, the product is finally ready to be shipped and experienced. The feedback that comes next is why we put the effort we do into our products.
A unique aspect of MSB products is their life after shipping. With in-the-field updates and support, we continue to tune and add features to our products, increasing their versatility and value based on user feedback and requests. With our film studio, we will create service guides and setup videos to get the most out of our products. Buying an MSB product is an investment and we are happy to partner with you through the many years of listening.
